New great quality sausages on the menu

One of my goals when I took over the Wind Dog Café was to offer really good locally sourced food.

Our homemade American burgers made from 100% steak mince with no additions other than a little salt and pepper were only the first step.

I am very excited to announce that we now have new high-quality sausages on our Café menu. Our new ‘bangers’ contain a whopping 80% meat (!), are made from locally reared pork and come courtesy of Shetland butchers J.K. Mainlands.

I am also talking to Mark Mainland to source other high-quality local products for the Café, such as Shetland dry-cured bacon or lamb sausages.

Fresh summer look for the Wind Dog Café

We’re sprucing up the Wind Dog Café for Spring – with fresh new tablecloths, new clean white mugs and new soup recipes. We’re also expecting a new batch of Wind Dog merchandise shortly, such as T-Shirts, Wind Dog Coffee Mugs and branded Travel Sweets.

And with all the spring sunshine we’ve enjoyed lately, I think it’s almost time to re-stock our Ice Cream freezer…

More of MAY’s adventures – a Shetland Sheltie in Japan

Luckily, all my good friends in Japan are alive and well after the terrible earthquake and subsequent devastation.

One of my friends, Rieko, lives in Aomori in the North of Japan, and didn’t have electricity for a couple of days. But I am very glad to say she’s now ‘checked in‘ with me and is OK. The Wind Dog Café has made a contribution to the Japanese Red Cross via www.japan.centre.com.

Check out the website of you would like to make a donation too. Or donate at the Café.

There are new photographs of my friend Shigenori’s beautiful Shetland sheepdog ‘MAY’ which you will see shortly on our Exhibition Wall at the Café. I hope you are enjoying the new pictures of MAY as much as I do!  Click the images to view.

Check out our new Library Books

I have asked the Library in Lerwick to send us new books for the Wind Dog Cafe.

Please feel free to browse our new stock, borrow, exchange or even contribute your unwanted books to our library so that other guests can enjoy them.

We now also have an ‘international’ section in our library – with some very interesting books by Japanese authors.

New Staff at the Wind Dog

Please welcome Jolanda Jansen to the Wind Dog Café – many of you will already know her from the Health Centre in Mid-Yell.

Jolanda will work at weekends and – being Dutch – knows all about a nice cuppa and good cake! So you can look forward to some great new cakes on the Wind Dog menu.

We are Open!

The Wind Dog Café is now open all year round – obviously, weather permitting J

Just before Christmas there were a couple of days when the weather really was against me – including one day where the only customer at the Wind Dog Café was the staunch soul driving the gritter across Yell! That day it really seemed like he and I were the only ‘Idiots’ on the road (and rather me than him, I must add!) J

Let’s hope we don’t get another spell of snow and ice to make my journey to Yell all but impossible! But as long as the weather holds I will keep the Wind Dog Café open throughout the winter months – and that’s a promise!

Our new American Burgers and Muffins are a hit with customers!

Our ‘American Weeks’ at the Wind Dog Café with homemade Burgers and freshly baked muffins have proven very popular with our customers.

And it’s all courtesy of our new American ‘gal’, Alana, the daughter of our new Yell dentist from the USA.

Alana originally comes from Anaheim, California, but has lived most of her life in the Mid-West in Kansas. Having lived on a working on a ranch with horses, birds, sheep, llamas, boxer dogs and all kinds of creatures great and small she’s very good with animals - so the ‘Gutcher Geese’ loudly demanding food at the Café shouldn’t phase her one bit!

Alana has previously worked as a cook at a hotel and resort in Chamberlain, South Dakota, and she brings bags of experience to the Wind Dog Café. I think it really shows on our menu!

She loves music (anyone want to bring in some CD’s to introduce her to Shetland Music?) and plays trumpet, french horn and the electric guitar.  Obviously, adjusting to life in Shetland is a massive upheaval in Alana’s life, but I think our new girl is doing just fine!

Since Alana is going to school in Lerwick, the Café will close at 4.30 p.m. on Sundays

The Gutcher Geese

In the few months since I’ve had the Café I have really taken to the famous ‘Gutcher Geese’.

And I think the feeling might be mutual J! Now hardly a day goes by without the geese stopping by the Café for a snack and making their presence heard rather loudly.

With all the snow we had I think they can do with a bit of help through the winter, and I sure hope that we’ll see some little goslings in the spring. Fingers crossed.

New Coffee Blend at the Wind Dog

We all love a really well-brewed Cup of Coffee, and I myself am a big Coffee drinker!  Last week I met up with Karibuni Coffee Expert Michael Bates for a ‘Coffee Tasting’ session, so we could bring you the very best Coffee at the Wind Dog Café.  The Coffee we both liked the most is the Karibuni ‘Organic Fairtrade Sumatran Dark Roast’.

This Coffee is a ‘Silver Award Winner in the Great Taste Awards 2006’ and has a ‘rich chocolatey flavour with a velvety smooth aftertaste’.

Also, the ‘Fairtrade’ label in Coffee, Chocolate and other Third World crops is really close to my heart – I feel very strongly that the local farmers who grow the coffee beans should receive a fair price for their produce so that they can make a decent living.

My big thanks go to Michael Bates at Karibuni and his excellent recommendations!

Oh, and I also want to specifically thank Michael for his short ‘masterclass’ on storing and handling ground Coffee: Thanks to his expert advice our new coffee blend at the Wind Dog Café will now be delivered in much smaller quantities that are sealed individually for flavour and freshness – and making a better cup of coffee for you.

12 December 2010

Please welcome Alana to the Wind Dog Café!
Whilst our Maggie is away ‘doon suth’ until April, Alana will be ‘holding the fort’, working Saturdays and Sundays.

Alana is the daughter of our new Yell dentist from the USA.  Since Alana is going to school in Lerwick, the Café will close at 4.30 p.m. on Sundays

Before coming to Shetland, Alana has worked in restaurants in the USA, so I’m very excited about trying out some of her original American recipes.  From January 10th you will find homemade burgers on our ‘Specials’ board, prepared from fresh mince and served with a variety of all-American trimmings.

We’ll also have some other American ‘goodies’ on the menu: Such as freshly baked brownies, muffins, chowder and other food from the US.

So please come and say ‘hello’ to Alana. I’m sure you’ll make her feel really welcome in Yell and at the Wind Dog Café!
