New hand-crafted cards now on sale One of my objectives for the Wind Dog Café was to provide a platform for our local Artists and Crafters. There is so much creative talent in Shetland!
And I am very happy to announce that we now have two brand-new ranges of hand-crafted cards for sale.
The first range comes from Angie Hatton, who combines traditional Shetland motifs such as Puffins, Otters, Vikings and other imagery with beautifully textured backgrounds inspired by the Shetland landscape. Each card is an original and no two cards are the same.
Angie says: “I moved to Shetland with Harry in 2007, we feel it is our spiritual home. We live on a croft in Yell, with two Border Collies, hens, ducks and a goose!”
You can see her ranges of cards here: www.shetland-crafts.co.uk
The second range of cards comes from Jane McAuley in Unst and features wonderful photographs of our Shetland Wildflowers, which do attract a fair number of visitors each year. Amongst other stunning floral images, her range of cards includes some of the rarer species of wildflowers that can only be found in Unst.
We also have a new range of Shetland photo postcards for sale.

Wind Dog Café Menu extended for Spring/Summer Our new Menu for Spring/Summer features many more options for a delicious Café Lunch, new dishes for vegetarians, a great new range of sweet and savoury home-baked scones, fresh wraps and salads, and more locally produced ingredients:
- Our Pork, Beef and Lamb Sausages (mint sauce optional) are packed with a whopping 80% meat and are hand-made by local Shetland butcher J.K. Mainlands using locally reared meat. - All our eggs (served for the breakfast, in the filled rolls and used for baking) are free-range and come from small local producers in Yell and Unst. - As many Vegetables, Herbs, Salad leaves and Fruit as possible will come from local growers ‘The Urge’ in Unst. So you can look forward to some truly seasonal soups and delicious salads.
Our Ice Cream Freezer is fully stocked What with all the great weather we are enjoying it was time to put our Ice Cream Freezer back into operation.
‘Global warming is here – at last!’ was what our Postman said to me the other day. J The humorous remark aside, I can’t remember an Easter Holiday or April in Shetland when I wasn’t freezing my butt off in foul-weather-gear complete with waterproofs and big woolly hat and mittens! So enjoy the sunshine and let’s all hope for a great summer!
Get WILD ABOUT ART at the Wind Dog Café! Sunday 19th June from 2.30 onwards. An afternoon with renowned Shetland Artist Anne Barron from Papil, Burra.
The Wind Dog Café plays host to Anne Barron’s Art Club – but this afternoon is open to anyone who wants to start painting in watercolours.
If you want to join us and get a first-hand expert tutorial on how to start, please contact Anne Barron at wildaboutart@yahoo.co.uk or telephone 01595 859060 to book a place.
Find out more about Anne's work here: http://www.wildaboutart.co.uk
Anne says: ‘Inspiration is everywhere, and I'd like to give people a chance to paint the seascape, any wildlife they might see on the day, or any still life inside the Cafe that inspires them - a cup and saucer, a cake on a plate, some of the ornamental items in the cafe - really whatever inspires.’
‘I'll be there to give guidance and advice to anyone who wants to come along - I'll give a quick demonstration of a watercolour tip before we start - possibly "using watercolours wet into wet".
Anne will provide all the art materials and tuition on the day. Cost is £10.00 per person including refreshments (sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee, cold drinks). tuition and art materials.
We’ll have tables at the Wind Dog Café set aside for panoramic views of the Bluemull Sound and Fetlar. And if the weather is nice we can even paint outside with an uninterrupted Sea Vista!
Whether you are already a budding artist or just fancy trying watercolours for the first time – you don’t want to miss this day of getting WILD ABOUT ART with Anne Barron! |
